This brings back memories. I heard this for the first time 45 years ago on the Dr. Demento show.

On John’s 53rd birthday I was a dj for WCSL radio in Cherryville, NC. I decided that morning to try to land a live phone interview with The Man in Black. I telephoned The House of Cash in Hendersonville, Tennessee planning to ask a secretary to have him call me collect if he’d like to do a live interview. Three calls no answer. I was playing the record “The Baron.” Finally, one more call. The phone was answered with a deep voiced,”Yes?” I said, “John?” “Yes?” “Happy Birthday!” He said, “Why, thank you very much. Who is this?” He gave me the greatest interview. I asked what he wanted to talk about. He said, “ Bob, YOU called ME. YOU shoot.” We talked about his HBO special, Hank Williams Jr., Steve Goodman, John Prine. He said it was the first time he had ever answered that phone. He came by to check the mail, the phone was ringing so “I thought I’d answer it. I appreciate the birthday wish. My 53rd year is as busy as ever.” A year later I interviewed June Carter Cash on HER birthday and she said John told me right. He didn’t answer that phone usually. In July 2011 I sang on stage in Gotha, Germany. 8,000 people at a festival. We opened with “Folsom Prison Blues.” German audience LOVED it. They loved Johnny Cash! By the way, when John and I hung up, I fell apart on the air!
